Polarized Neutron Scattering Magnet

We are delighted to announce we have been awarded a contract to supply a 3T Horizontal Magnet to United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI). 

The magnet will be used for polarized neutron scattering experiments at ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source, a world-leading centre for research at the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) near Oxford in the UK.

The use of spin-polarized neutrons in neutron-scattering experiments provides fundamental information on magnetic properties of materials. A challenge in such experiments however is maintenance of the neutron polarization through large magnetic fringe fields.  By exploiting the use of iron, the HTS-110 high-Tc superconducting (HTS) magnet offers a favourable solution for maintaining neutron polarization.

The split-pair magnet provides a maximum horizontal magnetic field of >3 tesla while the fringe field is less than 1 mT at 0.5 m from the magnetic centre and the zero-field nodes are located outside the magnet cryostat easing the control of neutron polarization at entry to the magnet. The magnet also offers a vertical room temperature bore of >80 mm in diameter for sample access and 4 horizontal bores with an opening angle of 32° for neutron access, which in combination maximise the workable experimental volume.

This magnet exemplifies how the combined requirements of magnetic field, sample access, optical access and neutron depolarization can be satisfied by passively shielded, symmetric split-pair HTS magnets for polarized neutron experiments. HTS-110 now has many sample environment magnets in action around the world, both at synchrotron x-ray and neutron facilities.
